04. Making...

Experimental Pavilion Blurring Lines Between Industry and Play Collaborators: Unistrut / Columbia University GSAPP Pavilion, 2017 Blur Pavilion was created for Columbia GSAPP’s End of Year Show, in May 2016. A regularized steel frame encloses a colorful forest of taut rubber tubing. The pavilion is at once solid and dissolved. A regularized steel frame encloses a soft forest of rubber tubing. The architecture vibrates as you pluck and stretch it out of shape. With enough vibration, the entire structure moves out of focus. Visitors are invited to input their energy into the system, watching how a single tube transmits its movement to surrounding elements. You can immerse yourself in the material, using the rubber seats or leaning back into its web with your body. Heavy sliding doors at each entry make even the metal structure interactive. In this room, the vibration surrounds you, and the outside world begins to blur away. The pavilion was designed, fabricated, and constructed by a collaborative team with: Becca Book, Hansong Cho, Jiapei Li, Kevin MacNichol, Ge Zhao, Caitlin Magill, Eugene Ong, and Edward Palka. The project was built with the support of Mark Bearak, Brigette Borders, and Mark Taylor. The project was funded in part by contributions from Uni-Strut.
